Bartending School Scams: The Facts They Don’t Want You To Know

Bartender Training

You look up a few local schools online, call and ask some questions and they tell you to come in to check out a class in person or to come in for an ‘interview’…

You go upon arriving feel like you’re at a used car sales lot as they tell you bartending is extremely complicated if you start out untrained but that THEY can get you ready…

They wow you with facts about the all the different types of drinks and alcohols and terms you’ll need to know, flip a couple bottles or juggle some mixing tins and say, “this will be you in a week!”

They may even tell you how you’ll be more well prepared than real bartenders after you join their, best-of-the-best, one-of-a-kind bartending school and will at some point brag about how X % of their students find jobs because they’re school has “manager connections” around town.

They may also tell you that the school has guaranteed job placement for their students.

And of course you’ll “start making $200-$500 cash every night!”  All you have to do is join the party and fork out the $300-$1000 for a class that is anywhere from 2 days to 4 weeks long (depending on what they offer).

Oh, and don’t forget…“You should sign up quickly because our classes are always full!”

And most people who are desperate, broke, and on their last straw go for it hook, line, and sinker.

There’s a sucker born every…

The only reason I know this is because I worked for the self proclaimed #1 bartending school in Southern California for about a year or so and was trained on a sales pitch very similar to this.

Initially I took the job because I was transitioning back into the bartending industry after a short hiatus where I attempted to get a “real job” working in the corporate ranks (not for me).

While I was exploring my potential options, this bartender school teacher thing came along. The money was decent, and it was the low season for bars hiring in my town so I thought…what the heck, I’ll gave it a shot.
